How'd you get your Promise Ultra66 to work?

New MessageHow'd you get your Promise Ultra66 to work? (modified 0 times) Brian|S|
I believe I've noticed that a few people on this board are using the Promise Ultra66 IDE controller. I picked up one of these yesterday. Great part is, that I will be able to cram this and the ISA 10BT card together in the shared slots. However, I've having a difficult time getting the Promise to work with the onboard sound. The following situation happened on both a clean 98se install, as well as an old one. With the Promise card in the system, whether or not running with the included drivers or as 'standard pci ide controller', when I install the audio drivers by removing the 'unknown device' and then installing the driver for the 'audio device', and rebooting, everything is detected and the audio drivers are installing when the system hangs. This will then occur everytime I startup Win98. If you guys can at least confirm that you've got the Ultra66 controller working on the websurfer under win98, I'd be content. I simply don't have the time to start trying new configurations and reinstalling windows. If you can also outline the steps you took when setting up all of your drivers and such, it'd be much appreciated. Also, I couldn't get the Promise to boot until I disabled the USB ports. Is there any way around this? Thanks again guys...

I have the EXACT same problems, even after flashing the BIOS to the OEM version that _MiSFit_ found (in theory a version with more hardware support than the later BIOS that shipped with the WebSurfer) and taking out the DOC. I also would appreciate anyone's input to solve this problem. Would better luck be had with any of the BIOS files available in the "4BIOS.zip" I've seen mentioned help?

BTW, What next Codeman??

I just tried it with win 98 and got the same problem. This problem does not happen in win 95. After working with these drivers I can tell you that they were designed for OSR2. Maybe I would have been better off with an ISA IDE and a PCI network card that everyone seems to be having success with, but I bought my parts before much was found out about these devices. It's not a total loss though, Windows 95 does run faster, and USB takes up CPU power anyway. I'm waiting on a 10BT ISA net card right now, and if I can get that running with OSR2 and the promise card I will be happy. Otherwise, the cards go to eBay and I will go the ISA IDE and PCI NIC route.
