This is my problem. I am able to boot off a 850mb WD drive that has win98 on it(i get lots of errors because it came out of a differettn system, but thats besides the point). I set in the bios Boot sequence: cdrom, c so that I could boot off the RH install cd. Whenever I try to boot off my rh 6.1 cd, i get this message:

Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM :
1. FD 1.44MB System Type-(001)

SYSLINUX 1.45 199-06-14
It appears your computer has less than 608K of low ("DOS")
RAM. Linux needs at least this amount to boot. If you get
this message in error, hold down the ctrl key while
botting, and I will take your word for it.
Boot failed

I've tried taking out the original RAM and putting in a PC100 64mb chip and still the same problem. I've also tried unplugging the hard drive to make sure there was nothing being loaded from the mbr...still the same problem. I do have the original bios still, which I may try flashing since I'm stuck. I am using an isa controller (some sort of acer product that came out of a 486). I have the cdrom set as slave and the hd set as master.

I've had the same thing happen to me when trying to boot off of a Caldera OpenLinux 2.3 cd. If I do what it says and hold down control while booting from the cd, it actually boots and shows a console screeen prompting for a boot command... The default command (this command is issued after a period of no keyboard input) hangs the machine. Ctrl-Alt-Delete won't restart, just a big middle finger on the power button. I suspect that the hang has something to do with the x-based caldera install program. I've heard that the kernel needs to be re-compiled with a special switch (can't remember which one at the moment) in-order for X to work with the Media-GX chip-set.

SO, I bet that if you hold down control like it asks you to then you might get a little further in the boot process.

I suppose I should have mentioned this in my first post; I did try holding down ctrl when I boot and I do get past that message. But it just locks as soon as I attempt to install. I've tried expert mode and telling it that I have 80megs of memory(linux mem=80M expert) and still the same thing. I'm going to try searching for that switch you mentioned, and if I find it, I'll let you know. Thanks for the help ;)

I got the same error booting the Slackware 7 CD, but removing the DoC fixed it.

Removing the DoC did NOT fix the booting-from-CD problem here. It seems that the I-opener firmware somehow does not do a good job of booting from ATAPI CD-ROMs... I only tried this with newbiosm.bin, a hacked OEM BIOS. Haven't tried flashing to the original WSP BIOS yet. What BIOS version are you guys using to boot from CDs successfully? And also, I'm using an ISA controller card, not the onboard IDE thingy, could that also make a difference? Thanks.

I'm was using an OLD isa ide controller with the original bios. The cd booted without any problems at all(once the doc was removed).
Does the bios see your cdrom drive at all?

Yes, the BIOS sees the CD-ROM and everything. It sometimes boots up to the syslinux boot: prompt, other times it fails / prints garbage on screen / stalls. The drive itself could be wacky, it's an old 4X, but I somehow doubt that, since I've booted from it before several times on another machine. Seems like I'll be flashing the BIOS to the previous code to try this out...

I had the same problem trying to boot off the CD. I put the hard drive in another machine and gave it a bootable DOS partition. I copied the dosutils directory (and all it's sub-directories) to the dos partition, along with some other usefull utils and editted the startup files to load the CD-ROM drivers. This allows booting off the hard disk and running the linux install via LINLOAD (run AUTOBOOT.BAT) without any problems.
