X-Windows Help: Video at 800x600 or better (modified 0 times)
VivianC
Hey all, I need a little help:
I am having trouble getting my X-windows session to come up with anything other than 640x480. Could anyone help me with what settings I need? I'm still kinda new to Linux and I'm using Mandrake 7.
Thanks!!
Viv

Hi Viv,
As far as I can tell, the onboard video only support 640x480. It's only a 1mb vid card so don't expect too much out of it. You may want to dig up an old PCI vid card unless the PCI slot you have is already take up by a IDE controller.

if your using framebuffer support then
you have to change the mode in lilo.conf
and the ws will boot in 800x600 and you can use 16bit color
don have the mode numbers on hand look at the frame buffer howto

Gondola
24 bit color works on my WSP, but that may just be in 640x480. I know 800x600 works with 16 bit.

Has anyone found an X server that can drive this video chipset native, with acceleration? Or is it officially unsupported? I'm using framebuffer support at the moment, but I hate the fact that I cannot change the refresh rate up from 60Hz. Of course it doesn't matter for a TV set, but I'll be using it with a computer display as well.

captaingoodnight
in /etc/lilo.conf:
vga=314
this will let you use 800x600 at 16bpp.
good luck

Antipop
To see if you can run at a certain resolution/color depth just pull out your calculator and put in:
vert pixels * horiz pixels * color depth / 8 / 1024
Ie. : 800*600*16/8/1024 = 937.5 (kilobytes). As long as it equals out to 1 or less, you can do it on your WebSurfer.
