Lockups..

New MessageLockups.. (modified 0 times) Setes
Lockups driving me nurtz. Here's the dillyo:

Using CUSA ISA IDE card w/ Maxtor DM+ 40g hd. Ample cooling (fatter hs on cpu, old cpu fan mounted in front of PS blowing in onto hd, small fan outside case near power plug sucking out). D-Link USB ethernet adaptor.

Had to install MaxBlast in order to recognize the drive. No prob. Installed 98litePro. No prob. Networking. No prob. WinAmp... well, it works fine for a while, then the system just locks up. I've backed down to 180mhz from 233 (USB doesn't seem to work at 266) and still have the problem. Tried reinstalling everything from scratch twice w/ same problem.

I'm currently running a dos based mp3 player (mpxplay) as a test and it seems to be working fine.

I've disabled all tsr's in windows. Explorer and Systray only. Have also tried using alternate shells but Winamp still craps out after a while.

Ideas anyone?

I have a similar problem.

I'm not sure if this is a heat related problem...
Here's my setup:
WSPro Overclocked to 266Mhz
SMC EZ-NET PCI 10/100 Ethernet
GS-12 (something like that) IDE controller card.
2.5" 4G toshiba drive, via 2.5-to-3.5 adapter.
144Meg Ram (Added 128M for testing)

Installed Win98SE with all internet updates.
Connected to my network via a ethernet switch at 100Mbps
And have connection to Internet via ADSL.

Surfing seems fine, running a distributed.net client on it and still works fine.
But if I go to foxnews.com and run a video, the box freezes up after about 2 minutes. I tried lowering the settings in bios to be the slowest and it still crashes,
even bringing the box back to 180Mhz does not do the trick. The massive video processing must be stressing the chip to much.

I'll try running it again tonight with a big fan pointed at the WSPro.
And then try BeOs 5.

Anyone else able to get high res streaming video to work ?

Thanks,
Chi

Well, I did yet another clean install. Went for 98micro this time. Then only installed audio/video drivers and winamp. It's been playing now for over 2 hours with no lockup - that's running at 233mhz.

Next up will be the USB Ethernet drivers.

Setes, I've got an mpxplay question for you :)

It seems like my problem is the opposite of yours. I can play an mp3 just fine in Winamp, but if I play an mp3 in mpxplay in either 'real' dos or an ms-dos window, the audio will cut out after about an eighth of the track. It seems to happen right as the hard drive accesses. Any ideas? Have you ever heard of this problem? Thanks for any information.

Brian|S| - I didn't try running mpxplay in a window... I booted straight into dos and played a couple cd's worth of mp3's w/ no problems. Perhaps there's a conflict w/ mpxplay accessing the sound hw directly from within windows... dunno.

As far as my dilemma goes... I installed the drivers for the D-Link USB ethernet adaptor. Started WinAmp. It didn't even run for an hour without locking up. I'm gonna remove the drivers and adaptor today to make sure.

I'm also gonna post a new topic regarding the use of cards in both the ISA and PCI slot.

Setes, to clarify, I've tried both an MS-DOS box as well as DOS by itself. Same problem. Hmm... very strange considering how we're both using the compusa IDE controller (multi-i/o card I assume) and yet I'm having this problem and you're not. How many different 'new' bioses are out there? perhaps that's the issue? I'm using Misfit's 'new' bios which states 'new bios for hacked websurfers' on bootup. Ah-well... I'll probably stick with Winamp in windows anyway... and it doesn't have the 8 char filename limit that dos does: annoying when deciding what playlist to load. Now to reply to your new post Setes...

Hmmm... I haven't tried flashing to a newer bios yet. I'm back to trying to fiddle w/ using 2 cards. Same thing - bios and win recognizes the lan card, but it shows up as crapped out in device manager. I just dl'ed the drivers from Intel... maybe using their driver instead of the std win98 one will make a difference (at least I should be able to use their config util to put it in nonpnp mode).
