SMC EZNet 10/100 NIC success?
SMC EZNet 10/100 NIC success?

New MessageSMC EZNet 10/100 NIC success? (modified 0 times) booboo
My WS is currently configured using a CUSA generic IDE (that everyone else seems to be using) and a SMC EZNet nic... I managed to intall both and have windows98 (98lite) installed. The NIC is properly recognized, but when I try to browse anything, I get a DNS error. Even browsing the network neighborhood gives me an error. After reading through the messageboard, I found postings that mentioned I should flash my bios using Misfit's bios. So I did that, and still no help. I've tried to flash using the newbios.bin, newbiosm.bin, oldbios.bin and nothing works. 98 recognizes my NIC, but nothing happens! Has anyone else been able to get this NIC to work?

New MessageSMC EZNet 10/100 NIC works fine here. (modified 0 times) Dr. Ion
I'm using the same NIC on my WSP just fine.
No errors there.

The audio is all jacked, but the USB Ethernet is fine.

I'm using newbiosm.bin from Misfit, with a PCI SCSI card and no DOC.

I have the CompUSA ISA Multi/IO EIDE controller and a PCI SMC EZNet 10/100 ethernet card... I flashed using the newbios.bin and set the BIOS irq section from auto to manual... is there anything else I need to change? Win98se is just seeing the card as "PCI Ethernet Controller" and won't install any drivers no matter what I try, so I assume its a problem with the way I have my bios setup, thanks in advance.

I have an ISA ethernet card and a couple of PCI NIC's. 1 kingston 10 bt and an Intel 10/100.

I can get windows to recognize the cards and install them successfully but no network browsing, can't even ping. I tried 98se and 98lite no go.

The card is setup for dhcp and I have a router handing out addresses but I go to ipconfig or winipcfg and I get totally wrong ip's. Where are these IP's coming from?

do I need to flash the bios? can I restore the old bios if I need to go back?

let me know with any good info, Please Please Please Please Please Please

Make sure you use the save old bios option when you are flashing. That way you can flash back. Try setting the IRQ's 10-15 to ISA legacy. The problem I had was that the PCI nics tried to take the same IRQ as the IDE.

Whoa I can't believe that I got an answer so fast!

TTN2- forgive my ignorance but there is an application that allows you to backup the old version?

so is this a command line app that I run in dos or do I boot from a prepped drive with the bios upgrade?

You want to run one of the awdflash utilities. Take a look at this site. http://www.geocities.com/d1v3rs1ty/
You want the new bios pack. The readme is very well written.

Success!

With a lot of thanks to ttn2 I have a smooth running websurfer with 98se, winamp, musicmatch, browsing the network like a champ!

Tried the irq setting ttn2 gave me and that didn't do it. prom this and other threads it looked like it was a bios problem. flashed the newbios.bin from http://www.geocities.com/d1v3rs1ty/ and that got rid of the splash screen and my nic problems! I followed the settings that were listed in the docs for the bios (very informative and helpful) and booted up and double clicked on netwrk neighborhood and saw the whole network... no more error messages. I have been running it for 16hours now playing a loop of all of the foofighters albums and it is still running now, smooth with no skips unless I mess around while they are playing.

1 problem though there is a discoloration on the right and left sides of the screen (looks like wen you get a magnet too close) anyone had this problem? I haven't narrowed it down ye but it looks like it goes away when you shut off winamp... strange.

I would like to help you out, but neither of my websurfers have had a monitor or tv hooked up to them for 6 months. I would try opening up the WSP and wiggling cables around while its running. WARNING, be very careful around the power supply, one of the heatsinks has high voltage on it. If the pattern on the TV changes then it probably is either a loose connection or magnetic interference caused by the signals running over the wires. Another thing I should mention, when I did have mine hooked up to a monitor it would flicker during harddrive access. This tells me that it is probably pretty sensitive to electical and magnetic disturbances.
