I have the websurfer running off of the onboard IDE with a PCI D-link 10/100 card. Everytime I try to run an app off another system or even tranfer large files the system locks. I've seen the thread regarding the IRQ PCI steering workaround but it has not had any effect. I am NOT a network wizard so I may be overlooking something obvious....any suggestions please....
Thanks

I have the same problem, the box would crash if I transfer a huge file or
watch streaming video off the net.
I've used a SMC EZ-NET 10/100 card and a NetGear 310TX 10/100 card.
It would crash using either card, but it usually takes longer to crash
if I used the NetGear card.

Likewise. I can browse the web all day over the network, but once I try to transfer files or play media files, the box freezes up hard... Using Intel Pro100+ NIC, locks pretty much immediately. Using a generic RealTek NIC, locks after 50 megs of activity or so.

Nixed Network
Ok...I seem to be halfway there. I can transfer large files as long as I originate the transfer from the server PC....that is, copy and paste in Explorer. However, I cannot keep the WSP from locking when i try it from there.
To get this far, I reinstalled Win98se. My onboard IDE is using IRQ 14 and I only set the primary channel as active. I still think that there must be an IRQ conflict, or a badly written driver.
Does anyone else have this problem with an ISA NIC?
Does this seem to occur only with onboard IDE?
Thanks!

Ballast
I had problems too with PCI NIC - Finally pulled the NIC out entirely and went to a USB ethernet adaptor. Works fine and causes no lockups. USB definately puts an extra load on the CPU, so I find more 'breakups' in my mp3 playing, but I disconnect the USB ethernet when it's not in use. I even had problems with the USB Mouse interrupting things (even when mouse was not moving). Then I put the big fan on the cpu, overclocked to 266MHz and dropped the CPU voltage to 2.6 volts. Now I leave the mouse plugged in and it does not cause a problem even when I move it. (Note - I told Winamp that playing music had the highest CPU priority - that helps too, but I need to stop winamp if I want to do real computer functions.)

Well I'm running a 266 chip OC'd to 300 and have had no ill effects other then this annoying transfer crap.
Ballast- Which USB adapter are you using?
I am going to try to do what I can with an ISA nic and a Linksys PCI to see if I can solve this, but a USB solution may be the way to go...
Has anybody tried populating the Ethernet chip on the WS motherbaord and RJ-45 jack out the back? How did it work out? Or is this prohibitively impossible?
Well I have solved the transfer problem. For some reason the D-Link card in the WSP did not like something....it was going to a Linksys switch. I tried a Linksys card from another PC on my network and sure enough it worked. Strange thing is , when I put the Dlink in the old system (where I pulled the Linksys card from) it also works fine.
I didn't change any of the settings in the BIOS using Misfits newbiosm.
Good luck to you guys.

I had the same problem. The solution is to turn off USB in the bios. The reason been that the cx5530 doesn't work well w/ 2 items using the same IRQ, even w/ pci steering running. Until I figured out how to relocate my PCI-NIC in WIN98, I'll turn off USB support in the BIOS.
