Installing Linux...stumped!

New MessageInstalling Linux...stumped! (modified 0 times) El Barto
Alright...I know many of you have done it, and my time is coming soon...how the hell am I going to install Linux on this puppy? I'm planning on pulling my 1.5GB hard drive from my 486 and installing Linux on it. I do not want to install Linux on the 486, then move the hard drive to the WebSurfer, because many problems I assume will occur. I will be doing Mandrake 7...I know all distros allow you to install from the hard drive (that's kind of...idiotic) or from the network. Now, I could do it over the network, but how do I boot the WebSurfer with network support to install from another system? Or how do I install it from the hard drive? Help!

Also...I *COULD* hook up a CDROM drive to the WebSurfer...I think...but how would I power it? I already have to connect a hard drive power connector to the power wire...is there enough power from the WebSurfer power supply to power a CD drive and hard drive?

Go ahead and install Mandrake while your drive is in another computer. Reconfigure X after stuffing it in your Websurfer.I swap Linux drives between comps often and it's easy.

re: CDROM Drive.

The IDE Controller on WSP's is a decent controller, and will handle ATAPI cdrom's. As far as power goes.. the 45W supply won't handle a CDROM drive, hard drive, and the MB at the same time running full tilt (ie: during an install of an OS). My advice? for the install, use a separate AT(x) power supply for the HD and CDROM. ONce the cdrom is no longer necessary, power the drive off the internal power.

Alright, thanks for the replies. I think I may just go for the CDROM installation, hopefully that will work. If not, I will do the drive swap.
