nfs swap vs. swap on doc?
Where to setup swap?

New Messagenfs swap vs. swap on doc? (modified 0 times) hoyter
I have been working on bringing up a linux installation (Redhat 6.2) on a PC platform. My goal is to run disk-less on the Websurfer with root over nfs.

I've got the installation running now with root-over-nfs. The next step is to resolve where swap will live.

I figure I should have well over 10meg on the DOC by the time I am ready. I plan to have at least 64meg of ram in the websurfer so comparitively I don't think this is a reasonable size of swap. The alternative to running swap on the DOC is to run swap over nfs. I found a great page on this: http://zeus.instmath.rwth-aachen.de/~heine/nfs-swap/

A couple items concern me, mainly the performance. This guy suggests that it is really slow.

Anybody have any thoughts on this? Is it possible to swap on a ram disk?

I am so close I can taste it!

You don't *have* to have swap space -
w/ 64 meg ram you can probably live
without it if you're careful about what
apps you install (but since you've only
got 16 meg of "disk" space you can't install
anything really huge anyway :>).

Don't bother w/ swap over NFS - it will be
painfully slow. I wouldn't bother about
a RAM disk either - think about it - you're
using a chunk of your RAM to emulate a disk so you can write stuff to it if you run out of space in RAM. Check out the jailbait
distro - he's got it set up to use no swap and w/ a readonly file system (except for a
small ramdisk).

Thanks for the feedback. I think I'll try going "swapless". As for 16meg of "disk" you are wrong. I am doing root over nfs so I have effectively unlimited disk space. I am running a complete Redhat 6.2 install with all the cool fluff.

I guess if I start thrashing I'll add more RAM.

thanks again,

Mike
