3.5 inch drive placement
3.5 inch drive placement

New Message3.5 inch drive placement (modified 0 times) Steve
without going into all the detail and stupidity I went thru, here is
how you can fit a regular size hard drive into a websurfer.

1) flip the power switch upside down.
replace the 16MB memory with some low height pc100 memory.
mount the drive in the front right corner with the cable end
above the simms/cpu fan area. the drive sits on top of the pc100
simms. the 16MB simm that came with my Websurfer was just a bit too high to fit
a 3.5 harddrive above it.
the generic 32MB replacement simms I bought at a computer show are a little
lower but enough so that the hard drive fits now between the simms and the cover.

or
2) if what you'll be putting in the card slot is a network card
get a cheap NetSurf 10/100 card at a show. I saw it on pricewatch
for $10-$13. I bought mine at a computer show. the board is extremely short leaving
you plenty of room
to mount a regular hard drive in the card area on top of the internal
IDE connector. I put some pictures at
http://people.ne.mediaone.net/ssimpson/WebSurfer/

Note: to use a PCI network card you need to reflash the BIOS with newbiosm.bin.
