Power Supply Power & How Useful is the DOC?

New MessagePower Supply Power & How Useful is the DOC? (modified 0 times) El Barto
Welp, I made my first mistake with the Websurfer and pulled the DOC, killing 2 pins. That'll teach me to use my own two hands for somethin like that...heh. My question is, would the DOC have been very useful anyway? I am going to throw in a 20GB drive and install Linux on it...I heard Linux support for the DOC requires extra work and annoyance? I guess it's not very useful, considering I'll have 20GB. My second question is how much power does the power supply give out? Because I will be tapping into it for a hard drive...will there be enough power to power a CompUSA heatsink/fan combo? I hope so...!

Read some posts, this has been covered, but I'll sum up briefly a little here on the power supply:

It's a 45 watt supply. I have spliced a HD connector into it and it works very well. Other have reported powering both a HD and a CD drive with success. It should most definitely handle a HD and a fan.

The DOC is only useful (and yes, it is) if you're not going to use a HD, IMHO. Some have managed to squeeze an emulator and ROMs onto it, others Linux images, and still others Win95a images. I wouldn't worry about it myself, since you're using a big ass disk anyhow. Getting the disk to boot is the only trick, and that's detailed well enough here on the board.

(Of course, I'm having strange installation problems with Win98SE, but since you're using Linux of some flavor this really isn't interesting - people have gotten both 98SE and Linux to run off the disk just fine on the WS).

Thanks for the reply...now, I don't know if anyone knows this or not, but how many watts are left after the mobo is powered? Nothing else on an unmodded WebSurfer requires power, does it?

Check here for an idea of how much one can run of this PS:

It's pretty looney...300MHz oc'ed processor, 128MB ram, big coppermine hs/fan, 3.5 HD, and 32x CD drive all powered off the WS standard PS.

If that guy can do that, I'm sure you can power whatever it was you were hoping too (watch out for all the heat!).

Thanks a ton...yes...heat is bad. I already have an overclocked Celeron 300a to 450 in this room...now all I need is an overclocked WebSurfer and I can turn my room into a sauna.
