Wiring shielding...what to use?
Interference...

New MessageWiring shielding...what to use? (modified 0 times) Beeblebrox
I'm getting interference from the spliced power supply cables that power my hard drive. From moving them around, I can see that the video chip is getting hosed by the pigtail splice passing too near them. When the case is open, it doesn't matter, but when I cram it all in there, they're too close. I removed a section of the shielding on the PS wire, wrapped the HD pigtail, and soldered, covering only with electrical tape. Question is, what can I use to shield the wires again (I know, I know, I shoulda done it at the PS connector, but I didn't)? Can someone direct me as far as what to buy (can I find what I need like at radio snack)? Thanks!

I just spliced my power with my dad, and he had this shrink-wrap type stuff. It's like a tube, outter layer is plastic and in it is like, a thin glue-type layer. When you heat it up, it shrinks onto whatever it's around.

Radio shack use to sell copper alarm window tape that has adhesive on the back side. It was about 1/4" or 3/8" wide and very thin. This will work if you carefully wrap your wires and then cover with standard electricians tape. Note the shielding tape must be connected to ground at both ends for it to shield properly.

Funny.....When I soldered my hard drive pigtail connector---1/2 way between the p/s and the m-board----I didn't notice any shielding on the wires. In fact I've never seen shielding on those power wires in any computer I've worked on. Are you certain you don't have a cold solder joint somewhere in your setup? Maybe something else loose.

You're right...there isn't any shielding on the wires...I'm starting to think it's the HD itslef - the step motor maybe (but aren't they shielded?). I'll experiment some more with it's position and get back to you.

Generally, splicing power supply wires without using a wire nut (with or without solder) is not a good plan. My suggestion for you, would be to re-solder a new power supply pigtail, and solder it on to the connections on the bottom of the power supply. I have my wsp done this way, and experience no interference. But if you would like to shield your pigtail connector, you can certainly add the foil tape as another user suggested. In combination with that, using heat shrink tubing to surround it would be best. Unlike what the other user posted through, do not ground both ends of the tape. Doing so will create a ground loop, and increase the interference in many cases. Just attatch it to one side. (easiest would be power supply side.)

Cheers, Vector

Why would one just ground one side of the shield***Ground loop???***

The 2 Black power supply leads would provide a good ground common would they not?. They are connected together are they not?

When You are Shielding Conductors,
The Shield is thought of as a Drain.
It is only connected on one side,
normally the Power Supply Side.

If the Shield is Drained on the Load Side & It took a Spike, that would Drain back inside of the Shield, thur the Grounded Conductor & have to travel Twice as Far !

If the Shield were to be connected on both ends, It could Carry Current.
This Current could be Dirty.
If this happened, You could Cause the Problem, of Noise Induction, that You were Trying to Protect against !!!

I could be Wrong ??? So Please tell Me
But This My Understanding of what is going on.

Except, I don't think this is Your Problem.

When I was a kid, I could use a small transistor radio, tuned off station, to Find souces of Noise.

I would look around the Backlight Invertor.

Good Luck ! * StarFish *

WOWSERS *Starfish* You got a websurfer with a LCD Display? (You mentioned the Backlight inverter in your above post so I'm assuming there's an LCD) where did you get one of those??? What rev. is it...

The interference is almost definitely comming from the 3.5 HD. Annoying. Yes, I believe you're correct about only grounding one end - that's how I would have done it.

I'm now thinking I need some kind of crude shield between the HD and the mainboard. I think a shelf of aluminum attached to the case might be made to work. Pain though, because the space is so damn limited...I could only just get the drive in there with it all closed up.

I really think you're asking for trouble if yoy have to force the thing back together. There are other ways of doing this. A laptop drive will fit...no sweat. A Quantum Bigfoot drive will fit without any forcing...see previous posts on this subject. A standard 3.5" drive is not a good fit....could be dangerous....fire, etc.....if crammed over the power supply. I think your particular drive is the source of your interference problem. Many other people have hard drives in there without any problems. My own Quantum drive is in there, partially over the power supply, with no problems. I have a laptop drive in another Surfer without any shielding and no interference.
