Fix for no boot.
New type of failure solved.

New MessageFix for no boot. (modified 0 times) ckbone
This morning my Surfer would not boot...no video at all....green power lite on....no hard drive activity. After thinking about it all day at work, I figured I blew the p/s fuse....thinking perhaps the green lite indicates AC only. Too bad..fuse was ok. I metered the board and voltages were ok. Then I disassembled the thing and checked for shorts, etc. Nothing. As a last resort I swapped the ram (PNY 64 meg) for another unit of 64 meg. Bingo...booted. I then reinstalled the original PNY ram and it now works ok. The ram was completely seated...I guess somehow the connections were not 100%. Nothing touches the ram when the case is closed. Who knows? While trying to figure this out I remembered one thing you have to do when setting up the hard drive. When you first go into the bios settings, assuming you are using an isa controller card, you need to disable the onboard ide controller. Then you save the settings and exit..turn off the Surfer. Then you restart , re-enter the setup screen, and detect the hard drive. Save the settings and reboot. If you don't do this two step procedure...the hard drive will never be recognized. Perhaps this is one of the problems some people have during setup. I had completely forgotten this procedure.....just some thoughts....
