PCI NIC under Linux. Do I need to reflash?

New MessagePCI NIC under Linux. Do I need to reflash? (modified 0 times) ScumDog
Sorry if this has already been answered, but I can’t find a definitive answer on this board.

I’m trying to get a PCI ethernet NIC work in my WSP under Linux 6.2. I’m using a generic ISA IDE/Floppy controller that came out of some precambrian machine I stripped for parts years ago. From what I see on this board, it looks like I may need to flash the bios using the tools kindly provided by d1v3rs1ty to use a PCI device. My confusion comes from the instructions in the flash download which say “If you DO NOT need internal IDE use don't even bother with this”. So far I haven’t.

If it matters, I’ve tried two PCI NICs. Linux detects both. It chooses eepro100 for one and de4x5 for the other. I can ping localhost with both, but not the assigned IP address (or anything else) with either.

Any suggestions?

Aloha, I have a SMC PCI 10/100 fast ethernet card and slackware see's it as a NE2000 compatable, but I can't seem to init it or get data running through it. I tried flashing with newbios.bin and newbiosm.com, with the same error. Same problem in Win98se too, I am pretty sure that its a magical combination with the BIOS settings but I haven't gotten any replies to my post under this one. People on here have gotten it running with the exact same config as I have. So, I'm going with trial and error and I will reply if I find the magical combination before someone posts (pretty please post?) hehe

Pretty sure you need to reflash to use the PCI slot. The earlier thread from _Misfit_ refers to the generic allwell bios which disables the onboard IDE while enabling the PCI slot. Using newbiosm is his modified version of the generic bios with the onboard IDE working and ISA - PCI slots enabled. All this is stated in the Readme insid the zip from Diverse's site.

Thanks Augi. I'm going to give the falsh a try, tonight if I have time or it will be weeks before I have time to play with this thing again. I'll post the results.

Where are you getting the strange IP address from? DHCP? I have 2 websurfers with PCI nics in them. Both machine are running linux. As I recall, I had to set the higher IRQ's in the BIOS to legacy ISA. This forced the nics to take a lower IRQ. The problem was that the nic was taking the IDE IRQ. I think I set 10-15 to legacy ISA. Just for info, both of my WSPs have both slots filled. One has 2 nics the other a nic and an IDE card. I have a little info on my website, http://jjkroll.com . Not a whole lot right now, but I hope to update in a few weeks. I'm pressing for a deadline right now. Oh and I am running the newbiosm.bin bios.

Sorry that link won't get you to the WSP stuff very easily. The actual link is http://jjkroll.com/~jjkroll/linux/wsp/

TTN2-

thx for both posts again I am impressed with your quick response!

the ip's I get I have no idea where they are coming from! I install everything (props to all the suggestions on the bbs) and got 98se running like a dream only I forgot to set an active partition a couple times(hate when that happens). I installed a kingston kne30t 10bt and windows recognized it fine, only I couldn't browse the network. I thought it might possibly be a 98lite thing so I went to full 98se and no dice. I even used an intel 10/100 generic nic and windows told me that it wasn't running properly, tried the kingston fine and then the intel same thing! I would run winipcfg from windows and find a really weird ip address assigned to the nic. I have a linksys router handing out dhcp and never a failure on it. I would run ipconfig at dos prompt and same thing and I can't release them or renew without crash. Just some really weird stuff going on. ip ranges totally different from anything these cards have ever used or been assigned. Weird! Any ideas?

I will give the irq thing a try and that sounds like the problem.

I am still a little unsure of how to flash the bios... it sounds from other threads that this is part of the problem.

if anyone can give me info separate of this thread here is me email jp_dog@hotmal.com
