Hacked running and churning out lots of heat (modified 0 times) JayDaSinnFeinPimp well got my websurfer for 52 counting Tax, got a free IDE card from my boss..... however my HD that I was using is a 7200 rpm seagate (leftover from previous PC) and boy does it get hot..... First off I mounted it upside down on top of the power switch that I flipped upside down... sets on top of the RAM nicely (IDE pins pointing towards cyrix)... Had to dremal off the clips (the ones that hold the top on the case in front) on the front right of the top of the case otherwise they made the HD freakout when I closed the case I guess they put too much pressure when closed. Screwed the side down to the front of the case to keep it from moving... Well got it installing and booting windows no problem... however after some time the case got really hot.... So I ripped a fan off an old celeron heatsink and mounted it between the Power switch and the Power supply... got my drill and drilled a swiss cheese pattern on the bottom of the case screwed the fan down and plugged it into the pins on the mobo next to the video jacks and stuff. Now it runs a little cooler not many more places to add fans... Case closes nicely now with a 3.5 drive and since the fan is mounted on the bottom you cant even see the holes its now sitting on the top of my stereo churning out AC DC and Rancid... Could post pics if someone wanted them... can anyone think of somewhere else you could mount a fan as I know heat will increase when I overclock the cyrix...... Vote Libertarian 04-30-2000 15:41:41

RE:Hacked running and churning out lots of heat (modified 0 times) Rick I mounted the original CPU fan on the outside of the case. (I have another fan on the CPU now of course). There is another conector for that fan near the power supply. The plug comes off easy and I was able to snake the wires through the vent holes on the right side of the box and reattach the plug. I pointed the fan so it blows into the box and the longer screws I have attach the fan nicely through another two vent holes. No cutting was needed, but you do need longer screws and a replacement fan for your CPU. 04-30-2000 21:03:59

Replaced the cpu fan with a bigger heat sink/fan combo, mounted the 40g maxtor upside down above the inverted switch/power supply (with the tape treated cardboard you mentioned). OC'ed to 233. I tried 266 but started having some problems with the USB ethernet adaptor. I probably will leave it at 233 as Winamp seems to be running fine. Installed 98lite pro, and am now fiddling with replacement shells to save some resources. Other than that, the thing is working like a charm. Now I'll just need to get a 50' cat5 to run to my living room and I'll be dialed. The thing even streams shoutcast just fine (over DSL). Anyway, I want to mount the original fan somewhere to help dissipate the heat fm the hd. Idears? 05-02-2000 08:38:24

RE:Hacked running and churning out lots of heat (modified 0 times) Rick First off, I got rid of the card board. Even with the tape around it, I'm afraid it might start a fire. Instead I put electrical tape on the bottom of the hard drive. As for the fan. There are three vents on the case. Left. right, and top. I used the vent on the right next to the power supply. The holes in the vent are perfect for screws and snaking wires through. So I snaked the wires through the vent as described above, so that the fan was on the outside of the case and the plug was on the inside. Then I attached the fan to the outside of the case and pointed it to blow in. You'll notice that you can line up the two top holes in the fan with holes in the vent. With the use of longer screws you can attach the fan to these holes. Hope that helps. --Rick 05-02-2000 09:33:31

As for pictures, I'm in the middle of projects for school right now and I shouldn't even be spending time on this board. RE:Hacked running and churning out lots of heat (modified 0 times) Ballast Just a suggestion - buy a piece of perf board from RadioShack or your local electronics parts supplier (stuff is used for wire wrap projects). Cut it to size and mount on bottom of HD. It is a good insulator so nothing will short out - it's thin so it won't add any more height than the cardboard did - it's probably pretty fireproof (better than tape & cardboard anyway)- AND it's full of little holes, so the drive will get a little more ventilation. I haven't looked yet, but you may even be able to leave a little extra perf board in spots and mount standoffs to the case or motherboard to help mount/stabilize the drive. 05-02-2000 10:16:36

I ask because I have one and cannot use it on my older (1 year) desktop. Had to use it on my new desktop or artificially limit drive to 30 something GB. 05-02-2000 10:21:00

I went nurtz trying to figure out why 3 of my workstations would work with it but the WS wouldn't. So, I used the cylinder limitation jumper. BIOS picked it up immediately. Using it requires you to use MaxBlast to setup the drive though. Set up a boot partition of 2g and an extended partition (for MP3's) of 38g. THe only caveat is that scandisk craps out on the 38g partition. I'm gonna try DiskDoctor or something to see if it can handle it. ---------- Rick, I found that on the first big heat sink I used on the CPU, the fan was so close to the top of the case that it made a lot of wind noise. And the fan is the same size as the original but uses the fater connector. I got it off of an old Pentium 200. It doesn't come anywhere near the top of the case. The chimney effect keeps a lot of air flowing out the vents. I can feel it flow out. The nicest thing is that it's quieter than a fan. I wonder if this configuration would have enough airflow to have no fan at all. You would replace the CPU heat sink with a bigger one without a fan. If the heat sink is big enough, it should be ok. 05-02-2000 13:00:54

And yes its Blowing on the HD and Sucking on the power supply... We cut holes on the bottom of the WS for the one fan... the other fan just uses the vents on the back.... Bolex might post pics of his... I will post pics of mine once I get evrything back together BTW.... I am running an ISA IDE card now and a Supramax PCI modem... RE:Hacked running and churning out lots of heat (modified 0 times) ckbone There are at least 3 out-of sight places to mount fans. ...on the back,next to the ac plug......on the bottom, cutting holes, between the front power switch and the p/s... and believe it are not....behind the bulge in the front cover( a 486 cpu fan).. Blow the air in but cut some vent holes in the bottom edge of the front cover. The idea is to create an air-flow over the board, over the power supply and out the back. 05-04-2000 04:10:39

Before when I was working on it it never really got that hot, but now that I am playing a lot of MP3's it does get very hot. So I clocked it down from 266 to 200 and hooked up my external fan (that I mentioned before, but I thought I wouldn't need) and now it run warm. Still plays MP3's without problems over my 100BT PCI network card. I am running win 95 OSR2 which seems to be what the audio drivers were designed for. And it runs great. I haven't goten my 64Meg SDRAM upgrade for it yet, so it is still only running on 16 megs without any problems. All I'm doing is playing MP3's right now, though. I have other plans for it and I will need that extra memmory. --Rick 05-18-2000 18:35:19

Here's my setup: WSPro Overclocked to 266Mhz SMC EZ-NET PCI 10/100 Ethernet GS-12 (something like that) IDE controller card. 2.5" 4G toshiba drive, via 2.5-to-3.5 adapter. 144Meg Ram (Added 128M for testing) Installed Win98SE with all internet updates. Connected to my network via a ethernet switch at 100Mbps And have connection to Internet via ADSL. Surfing seems fine, running a distributed.net client on it and still works fine. But if I go to foxnews.com and run a video, the box freezes up after about 2 minutes. I tried lowering the settings in bios to be the slowest and it still crashes, even bringing the box back to 180Mhz does not do the trick. The massive video processing must be stressing the chip to much. I'll try running it again tonight with a big fan pointed at the WSPro. And then try BeOs 5.
