Heya,
I've got my LCD working using DOS and the MPXF software. I used to have a computer in my car playing MP3s, with a hard drive that booted into Windows, played MP3s off a CD, and then displayed all the info on a LCD with a plugin that I got from http://www.jarcom.com/inmotion
I'm using my WebSurfer to replace it, and I didn't want to mess with a hard drive crash, so I put DOS onto the DOC, and then I used and IDE card and CD-ROM to read the mp3's I burned onto a CD...
Anyways, I'm just using the default settings for the parallel port, but I'm pretty sure I've tried all of them, and they all seem to work.
If you're using that same plugin (the one by Mike Lynch on the inmotion web page), I noticed that the LCD test program didn't work right for me on the WebSurfer--it seems to drop characters when I output a text file to the LCD. The program's not really configurable, and, as I recall, the plugin isn't either, in terms of hardware settings. What's goofy is that the same LCD worked fine with the same software on both the computer I had in my car and my desktop computer...
So, if you're not too attached to Windows, I'd try the MPXF software. It's a front-end to MPXPLAY, and it has support for an IR remote, and you can pretty much customize it any way you want. That, and it boots a heck of a lot faster...
