New MessageLinux/KDE Help (modified 0 times) VivianC
Hey all,

As I stated before, I'm a Linux newbie so please don't flame me if I'm missing something obvious...

I have my hard drive installed in the WS. The OS is Mandrake Linux 7.1 booting into KDE. I installed and tested everything on another MediaGX board I had before moving the HD over. I'm using a Promise EIDE Max II ISA controler and a Dlink 530TX PCI network card. I have the original BIOS (never flashed).

Now my two problems:
1) When I start Xwindows and KDE, the screen resolution is about 180x100 (huge). I can't seem to do anything to get it smaller. This wouldn't be such a problem except for...

2) Now the network card isn't initializing.

Thanks for any help!

Viv

I think there was a thread about the need for a video driver, don't know how much help that is.

VivianC, what are the settings for the EIDEMAXII and your bios? Have you been able to boot from CD? I have the same controller, and I can't seem to boot off CD.

I didn't change any settings on the card, if I recall correctly. In the Bios is disabled all the IDE functions. I also pulled the DOC.

I don't think this card supports booting from CD. At least I wasn't ever able to get it working. Best bet is to make a small bootable partition with CD drivers, flash the bios (if needed) and then run the CD.

Let me know if I can help with anything else.

I managed to boot from cd using the EIDEMaxII card. This is how to do it:

Make sure the bios settings has the CDROM booting first. When the controller card is loading up it's settings, hit F2 to get into the setup screen. Change from PNP mode to manual mode. Set whichever port the CDROM is on to PRIMARY and the other port as something else. I think you can do this in the Normal settings menu, NOT the Advanced settings. Restart and pray.

the f2 is for your ide controller card? i have a promise 66 pci, f2 doesn't do anything for it.

i'm still trying to get my cdrom to be bootable so i can install linux easier. my mandrake 7 and suse 6.4 didn't boot up after putting it's hd in my websurfer from the desktop of which they were intalled on.

thanks.
