Windows and Linux installations bomb
When I try to install Windows or Linux now, my Websurfer bombs. Why??

I had Windows 98 SE running on my Websurfer for a couple months, not really using it in the living room, so I moved it into the computer room as a secondary PC to use while I'm camping^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hplaying EverQuest.

At this point it still worked fine, so I attempted to get it working on an external keyboard and mouse, since I planned to use it a bit and didn't want to replace the batteries every week. I removed the tabs and plugged in an external mouse and keyboard. It didn't work right away, so I checked the board here, and found out I needed to put in some jumpers and possibly remove the IR daughterboard. I put on the appropriate jumpers and the keyboard/mouse kinda worked, but the IR keyboard was still interfering, so I unplugged the daughterboard.

At this point, Windows refused to boot. I swore, raised a few blood pressure points, and attempted to reinstall Windows. Installation goes fine except that after all files are copied and when it's "Preparing to run Windows for the first time" it crashes. The crash is a blue screen, but I can't write down the exception because it goes into a mode my monitor freaks out on. I swear, I curse. I set everything back up the way it was -- IR keyboard and mouse. Daughterboard reinstalled, jumpers removed. I reinstall from scratch. Same result.

I've since tried Slackware 7, Mandrake 7, RedHat 6.1 and 6.2, BestLinux, and one or two others I think. During the installation, while booting off the CD, they give me some variation of:

Kernel Panic: Free list corrupted

Any idea what the hell is going on, anyone?
This is driving me crazy.

Thanks.
G

My bet is you knocked the RAM loose or something. Remove and reseat EVERYTHING in the WS and try it. I bet that fixes your problem.
