WS Modem Disconnects !!!
WS was working GREAT for 2 months, now it dials out and promptly disconnects!!!

Through the excellent support I got on this board in the past, I got my I-O and my WS Pro up and running flawlessly with W98. Now I need some help again. My WSPro has been a key part of my entertainment center for the past few months. I had been using it solely for Napster, and it was working GREAT. I would be connected for hours at a time with no problems. Just a week ago, I noticed that I would get promptly disconnected upon dialing out (before username & password were checked), or just a minute or so after actually connecting up. I've tried the following troubleshooting things with no success:

Connect another computer to the same phone line (Dials up & connects - no problems).
Remove "Standard Modem" from devices list and reinstall hardware to Standard Modem.
Completely replaced Modem card with brand new card from my "backup" BRAND NEW WS Pro.
Modem Diagnostics says Modem is Fine.
Dial up directly through Dial-Up Networking & disconnects the same.
Dial up by launching Internet Explorer and disconnects the same.

Still, the problem persists. Why was this working flawlessly for so long, and now disconnects. It's not the phone line or the modem. The CPU is not overclocked. It's running stock. ANY IDEAS, SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED...

Thanks,

SGer

I think I solved this problem on my own. I went into CMOS Setup (continually hit DEL upon booting), and restored the all original CMOS settings. Lo and behold, I connected and stayed connected for about 45 minutes, and I disconneced on my own.
I'm not sure why restoring these settings was required, since I never changed the Setup configuration before. Anyway I hope this might help someone with the same problem in the future.

Well, my 45 minute connection yesterday was an anomoly. I just can't get connected again. If anyone wants to respond to my initial thread with a solution, it would be MUCH appreciated.

All the best,

SGer

sounds like a problem i have been having. i did no modifications to the websurfer other than follow the information i found here to use my own isp without. everything was working fine. i was unimpressed with the unit so i took the modem out to use in another pc...when i did this i removed all the jumpers on the modem for plug and play...when i went to put the modem back in the ws to prepare it for sale i took a guess at where the jumpers went. i thought everything was fine as i heard it dial and start to connect...the screen showed a "connecting" message and then "starting service"...the next screen that comes up is one telling me i have been disconnected.

i suspect i have the jumpers wrong on the modem card. could this be your problem as well?
can you tell me where the jumpers are supposed to be?
