Actually - I've been successfully playing VCDs in the websurfer.
I'm running a fairly basic configuration. Stock processor and memory (16MB). Laptop HD and laptop CD Rom drive mounted along the right hand side of the surfer. OC'd to 233 MHz - couldn't go beyond that with *any* jumper settings.
Initially I was running a standard Win 98 install and yes - jerky video, but certainly not slideshow quality. So next, after reading all posts on this forum, tried a few other things.
First, I went in and disabled USB in the bios. This made a *huge* difference. Video, still jerky, however.
Next, installed 98 Lite sleek. Small, but noticeable improvement.
Next, dropped netbeui protocol under network setup. Again noticeable improvement - it's looking good now, but I started experiencing stability issues.
So, finally, I incrementally dropped the CPU voltage to 2.6v.
Result - I can play complete VCDs with smooth video or hours of MP3s with no crashes. No noticeable heat issues, either.
Hope this helps.
