Ok. This is making me really mad. I wanted to do the whole MP3 in car thing and I thought the WSP would be an excellent choice for my situation. Here is my setup:

Websurfer Pro
Stock CPU
48MB RAM
1.2 GB Hard drive in custom external removable case with security lock
CompUSA SIIG IDE/IO controller card
Hacked line in, out, and mic inputs
Handspring Visor Deluxe with custom serial cable for controlling player
Windows 98 Lite III
WinAmp with PalmAmp plugin
300W power inverter hard wired to the battery
Pioneer DEH-5200 stereo with IPbus to RCA input
Stock Speakers
Rockford Fosgate 10" sub
Rockford Fosgate 100z2 amp
1996 Chevy Cavalier

The problem is when I boot into Windows (It only happens in windows), there is a nasty crackling sound coming from the left channel. It is a very random sound and will happen at anytime. Here is the list of things I've tried to remedy the problem but have no effect on my situation:

Checking all connections and making sure all audio cables are separated from power cables
Removing and replacing the ram
Recrimping all hard drive splices
Turning on MP3 player before the stereo (I'll explain in a moment)
Tried a portable CD player on my stereo to rule out a stereo equipment problem
Tried headphones on the line out (Still crackles)
Tried a different hard drive with an identical partition
Tried connecting the player to a AC source from my house (Still crackles)
Tried disconnecting the subwoofer to rule out EMI and line noise
Tried underclocking the processor
Tried disconnecting the serial cable to see if there is a separate ground loop problem
Tried posting a message on www.mp3car.com but we have all agreed that the problem is within the WSP
Tried removing the SVGA connector (don't ask em why I tried that)

One of the things I've tried is to keep the stereo off until the player boots into windows. I tried this because the instructions that came with my stereo say that above a certain voltage coming into the inputs could result in a malfunction. Unfortunatly, this doesn't solve the problem. Here is a list of things I'm going to try:

Removing all modifications I have done to the motherboard (I've tried hacking the HD controller but without success)
Resolving the PCI Bridge driver problem (I doubt this has anything to do with it)
Removing the whole player and trying it inside my house (haven't done this since I installed the audio connectors)
Changing the BIOS (I'm currently using one from the 4bios.zip but don't remember which)
Changing the sound drivers
Changing the PSU

That's it. That's all I can think of that would resolve my problem. I ask EVERYONE to please shed some light on my problem. I'd apreciate it. I've put some good money into this system I'm trying to finish and this is the last problem I'm having. Other than the constant random crackles the system sounds pretty damn good but it does get very annoying. If you want, I can record the sound I'm getting and post it for everybody to hear if that will give you any ideas. I can also post some pictures of my setup once I see some successfull results on the problem I'm having. I will continue to give updates on what I've tried. Please help me out!!!!!!

I had all sorts of problems with win 98. The audio drivers are designed for Win95 OSR2, so that is what I installed. I then went to windowsupdate.microsoft.com to download all the latest updates. I'm using a promise EIDE max ISA controller card and a netgear F310tx 10/100bt PCI network card. I have the stock CPU overclocked to 200Mhz with a bigger fan and heatsink. I also have an external fan for extra cooling. I'm using an old 800 meg hard drive, and I put in an extra 64 megs of RAM. I also disabled the USB port. I tweaked winamp so it wouldn't skip and I have it hooked up directly to my stereo. My websurfer also runs apache web server that allows me to browse my MP3 collection from my i-opener and then send songs to play on the websurfer. It also runs wingate and is a wireless proxy for my i-opener. Both my i-opener and websurfer are equipped with an Aviator 900Mhz wireless parallel port NIC from webgear. I have no problems at all.

Yes, but you are still running windows 98 with 48 megs of ram. Windows 95 OSR2 is much happier with less RAM and the audio drivers were designed for that verson of windows.

I guess that's another thing I'll have to add to my "to do" list. I'm gonna pull out the WSP in a few hours and give it a runover inside my house and see if it still works the same as it did before I installed it in my car. I can recall it was working fine before I installed the audio inputs/output so if it isn't working the same as it used to inside, the audio inputs/output are the first things I'm going to remove (I don't use them anyway). We'll see in a few.

I fixed it!!!!!!! The problem was that I had a cold soldier joint on the motherboard where I installed the inputs/outputs for the soundcard. The thing would only start to crackle when the board got hot enough to make the joint expand. Since I'm not using the ports, I just took them off for now. This is a classic example of bad soldiering. Thanks Rick for your help. Also, if anybody wants to see my carmp3 player, I'm going to be opening a section at www.mp3car.com to show off my hard work. I'll let you know when that happens.
