Win2k Hack
Win2K works fine... but need video/sound drivers

I finally got a clean setup of Win2k to work. Please no flames! I am still planning to dual boot Linux, but for me Win2k is faster and more stable for my apps than Win9x.

- added 64Mb PC100 in second slot
- added SIIG UDMA-66 IDE card (very thin allowing easy addition of ISA card)
- Maxtor (yuck) UDMA-66 7200 15Gb disk, mounted in bubblewrap over inverted power switch
- Flashed to newer OEM BIOS (see separate thread "FIX! - For using PCI..")
- Removed DOC
- Rewired yellow and black LED pair to my IDE controller so that the middle light is disk activity

I am planning to add an ISA NIC as well but currently using USB

BUT... I need drivers for sound and video. The 95/98 ones posted elsewhere won't load.

Does anyone know where I can get some drivers?

PS If you plan on installing Win2K and need a OEM PCI/SCSI storage driver (like for my SIIG), load it up in an unattended setup file first as the "press F6... " seems to generate a Microsoft C crash due to the lack of floppy drive

Ok. I'll avoid the urge to flame you and ask; why? If you need a stable OS, use Windows NT 4.0 It all runs the same appz, MS lies about win2k being more stable (it isn't), it installs in about a tenth the disk space Win2k needs, and most of all, it runs about 3 times faster. Not just boots three times faster, your applications will eat up three times more CPU power to run thant they will with NT 4. Another plus, I would almost guarantee that there aren NT4 drivers for whatever you need.

And having said that, Linux is still better. I haven't a clue what you would need Windows for. Any application out there for windows has an equivalent for Linux that usually works better.

Why run Linux? just code your custom app to run as its own os in assembly.
linux people are lazy.

OT: Okay okay so I didnt want to start an OS debate! Sure NT 4 is probably better but I don't think it would work for me because doesn't its USB support suck? (and yes I know USB is a BIG CPU hog, but it beats all those dongles hanging off the parallel port). I like the idea of a custom app that is its own OS -- while we're at it who needs the BIOS -- extra flash memory for my custom app.

WIN2K DRIVERS: I am still looking for a video driver, but I just loaded the generic Soundblaster 16 driver and it works fine.

QUESTION: Does anyone know what is at PCI bus 0 device 18 function 1? It is my unknown PCI bridge device.

How did you get Win2k to work.

When I try to boot Win2k I get the ascii part:

Starting Windows 2000
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

But then it jumps back into the WebSurfer logo where is says:

"Please wait while WebSurfer starts" (or whatever)

Then back into the Win2k ascii part again.

It keeps looping like this while it tries to boot.

Windows 98 boots okay.

Also having trouble trying to dual boot Mandrake Linux 6.0 with Win2k Professional
I get an error from the Linux installation program when I try to put LILO in.

Hard drive is Maxtor 30G
Using FAT32 on first partition (10G)
Linux Native on second partition (2G)
Linux Swap on third partition (256M)

Still need to try FAT16 on smaller partition maybe.
Anyone else having problems? Any solutions?

TIA
Shark

That sounds like the PC is rebooting which sometimes happens when Win Setup is checking to see if the PC is ACPI compliant.

Try hitting F7 when it tells you to press F6 if you have RAID or SCSI drives. Nothing will appear to happen, but Windows then skips the ACPI tests.

If this doesnt help, try again and use F5 to bring up different HALs... usually standard PC or similar will work.

As for the linux problem try doing a search on the MS knowledge base as I remember something similar there about Win2K changing the Master Boot Record and confusing LILO.

Hey Guy2000,
I was wondering if the W2K installation was stable. I have winblows 98 and I keep getting blue screen vxd's - although I have not installed pci bridge software yet so maybe its that?

Hey Crackedup

It was stable for a day and a half before I installed some sound drivers. I installed the wrong ones first and then put in the generic Soundblaster ones which were okay, but then it was a bit strange... no blue screens though but some unknown app would crash on loading. Anyway, I blew away the whole installation (intentionally) as I wanted a clean hard drive to start playing around with the DoC. I am in the middle of reinstalling so will let you know after I have more chance to see how stable it was. But it was really stable for a day and a half with no sound drivers.

Also, I did use the new BIOS (not the new new one). The old one caused conflicts with my PCI IDE card and I couldnt install win2k without it, but now I have both the PCI and the ISA NIC working together.

I just wanted to update that I have had Win2k running for about a week now with no crashes.

I am now deciding which distribution of Linux to use, but thought I would at least update this post about Windows.

Note, I did have to disable Windows sounds... for some reason occasionally the automatic sound at boot up (or when navigating sites) caused explorer to crash. But since I disabled the sound scheme I have had no problems and play a lot of MP3s with no issue. Apparently this was a fault in the original Cyrix drivers and is probably not specific to the websurfer or Win2k.

I am using the generic Cyberpro 2000 drivers for NT 4.0 and the MediaGX drivers for NT 4.0.

My big gripe with this machine though is a pretty bad flicker on the TV out on anything other than white color. I am dual booting with Win98SE and have the same problem, so am hoping it may be better with linux drivers.

Guy2000, what is the name of bios that you flash to make it work. Please give more detail about that.

hacker,

I used _MiSFiT_'s BIOS which I think you can still find on diversity's page. I am not using the onboard IDE so I used the original hacked OEM bios, not the slightly newer one that supports onboard IDE.
