2 more questions, please...regarding power.
Again, I've searched, but come up empty-handed (empty-screened :)

1. File the first one under "I know just enough to be dangerous"... - The power supply. Is it a switching power supply, because I'd like to test the points on the board for various voltages, bu without th e"molex" connector connected. As far as I know, switching power supplies have to have a load attached when you power tehm on or they will fry - this is why I ask.

2. The blatently labelled "GND +12 GND" power tap sticking up from the motherboard between the SVGA cable and the Fuse (which is mounted on the power supply) - looks like a good spot to plug a fan on to - Does anyone know if it will handle the current draw for a couple (or 3 or 4) CPU fans? (at say... 0.1 Amp each...?)

Again - Many thanks in advance for a reply... This thing is SOOOOO close to being my 2-year-old's first PC!

I don't profess to know to much about the current capacity of the motherboard traces, but my guess is you would be OK with maybe .2 amp draw. It was designed for one fan so two shouldn't be a big deal, but anymore than that could be pressing your luck. I actually have my websurfers running fanless. A large socket seven heatsink does the trick. The biggest one I could get my hands on just fits under the cover. I have one that has been closed up acting as a router for my cable modem for about 6 months. No problems yet. The router doesn't have a hard drive though, just running LRP off the DOC and 2 network cards.
The other one I am using as a webserver and has a 10 GB laptop drive. I think I will drill a few more holes in the lid of this one. I plan to make a template that looks like the hole pattern that is on the top and drill holes down either side over the cards and the power supply. All in all I think you would be fine with a laptop hardrive and the stock heatsink. The fan circulates enough air.
Both of mine are at the stock voltage and speed.
Good Luck

Forgot to mention. There is a +5 V header near where the IDE header should be. I don't know anything about the power supply, sorry I can't answer that question. If your planning to connect a desk top harddrive, most people have pulled power from the main power lines running from the power supply to the motherboard.

Really forgetful tonight. I also run seti@home on both these machines 24/7. Which tells me that at the standard settings heat is not an issue.
