I need some troubleshooting advice for onboard IDE

Ok, Here is what I have so far. I soldered on the ide header, soldered on a lead for 5v and ground. I used resistor packs with the numbers 330(measured out at 33 ohms) on them that came off a old motherboard and for R99 & R100 used small chips with the numbers 220(measured out at 22 ohms)Checked the connections several times and the hard drive will spin up but will not boot. I keep getting the message press any key to reboot. Even took a drive I know is booting in an IOPENER I have, and still no luck. Are these the right parts? Any help or ideas would be great. Thanks Kyle

All I can say is ohm out every connection multiple times. I fought with the damn thing for months. Those parts are claimed to work fine. I never got my onboard IDE to detect the harddrive stably. I checked everything over and over again and finally gave up.

The only other thing that may help is to remove the DOC. You've probably tried that already though.

Good Luck,

The resistor packs and R99,R100 are 10..33 ohms - 22 should be fine. Most of the early failures can probably be traced to using 1k resistors for R99 and R100 or poor soldering on the resistor packs.

I have the DOC as well as the on-board IDE booting DOS from a notebook drive with 10 ohm resistor packs and R99/R100 - and it works perfectly - I just tested it recently after it leaving it switched off for over 6 months.

The Diamond HomeFree PNA cards are good choices for the PCI NIC on the websurfer - you can use inexpensive phone cable for networking, for instance to have a networked WinAmp MP3 player connected to a TV in the bedroom.
