Hello,

I have this recurring problem with sound locking up the WS when playing MP3 or longer WAVs. I tries a few of the suggestions here, but the problem remains after 3 days of fighting.

Setup:

Misfit BIOS
Promise Ultra 66 PCI controller
ISA 10 network
win98SE
128 MB RAM
2.1 GB HDD running in DMA 2 mode off the Promise
disabled on board IDE, serial, Parallel, USB

Tried to reserver IRQ 15, 14 so that maybe no IRQ conflicts will be hidden. No luck. All I can think of is maybe slow down somehow the Promise controller ? Seems like it locks up only when there is sound and disk activity at once (like cleaning the trash bin and DING ! locks up, but DING ! sound only is fine or disk activity is fine if no sound is playing). Changed sound IRQ from 10 to 5, disabled DMA, updated drivers, no luck.

Thinking to reinstall win98SE, but thought to check here first.

Thanks !

It sure sounds like a driver issue, but it's really hard to tell. I wish I could be more help, but I've never had that problem.

I tried about 3 different sets of drivers. I have read about this problem in a few other threads, but never really saw a resolution form anybody, except MAYBE switching from PCI ide / ISA net to PCI net / ISA ide which would slow down the unit. I am going to try a few other things first:
- reinstall clean win98SE (not much hope)
- try to fix onboard IDE instead of add-on Promise IDE (not much hope either, the onboard was damaged by the PO trying to solder)
- switch to lame ISA IDE / PCI network (last resort)
