Help!! 1 Inch Drives too thick?
Help!! 1 Inch Drives too thick?

New MessageHelp!! 1 Inch Drives too thick? (modified 0 times) Rick
It seems to me that a 1 inch drive is just too thick to put inside this thing. If the new RAM I ordered is any taller than the one that is already in there then I have no chance of getting the hard drive to fit. Has anyone had success with this? Where can I get a slimmer drive, or a cheap adapter for a notebook drive?

Check e-bay for you 2.5" to 3.5" coverter. goto the hard drive section and just suck for laptop, they are cheap like 5 dollars

Also - check out some of the online stores (try http://www.compgeeks.com) and see if they have any of the 2.5"->3.5" adapters in stock. I have a couple made by Cables Unlimited - they're pretty nice (a step above the cheap PCB ones a lot of places are selling). They're more expensive, but worth it (I paid ~$12 apiece for mine). Also call around to your local stores - I picked mine up locally - saves on shipping. :> I've got to look at the inside of my WSP again but it might be possible to rig up a HD holder (for slim HD's anyway) using standoffs to replace a couple of the screws holding the motherboard down then screwing a bracket (similar to the one for the IO) onto the standoffs. Find a source of 5v power to plug the HD into (if your using a notebook one), solder on the header/resistors or use a ISA/PCI card, and you are good to go! :>

move the power button to the rear put the harddrive going out over the power unit you will have to build a bracet to keep it off the power unit that how i got mine in on both of them ***********i got to get around to ordering my cable for my i-opener **********

I've got a quantum bigfoot 5.25"x.75" mounted in my WS over the power supply and SDRAM. I had to invert the power switch so that the leads point down then there was just enough room for about 2mm clearence top and bottom. Winblows is up and running now working on Ethernet. I'll post a link to pics soon.

Thanx for all your help. It looks like it will fit over the power supply if I move the power cable. I put cardboard over and around the power supply to insulate it from the Hard Drive. That middle heatsink on the power supply is VERY DANGUROUS. It is live even with the power off. Unplug the websurfer when you work in it. Anyway, I will probably insulate the carb board with some electrical tape to be extra safe. I think I am going to drop in a Seagate 17Gig Ultra DMA 66 drive from Onvia.com that they sell for $129 but I have a coupon from techbargains.com for $25 off orders over $100. I think the shipping is free too. I haven't bought it yet, so if someone finds a better deal, let me know. This is going to be an MP3 server and a router for my i-opener.

Cardboard aroud the power supply may not be a good idea. You want good airflow around those heat sinks. if your woried about a short with the bottom of the drive just use a piece the exact size of the drive. Something less combustable may be even better.

Yeah, thanx. I have already revised the idea to just putting electrical tape on the bottom of the drive. I also put a fan that blows air in on the vent to the right of the power supply on the outside of the case. this will help keep the hard drive heat off the power supply and visa versa.

go to radio shack and buy a piece of hobbiest 'perf' board (make sure you get the type with no circuit traces - just bare bakelite). Cut to size and use small dabs of bathtub caulk to 'glue' it in place or drill holes and screy it on - it is thin, non-combustable, and is full of small holes allowing some airflow for ventilation. If you like, you can leave a little extra perf board sticking out beyond the drive case and add some standoffs for added support.

I'm going to check with some local sheetmetal shops and see what they would charge to make me a new cover that is about an inch higher using the original as a template. If it is reasonably priced (after all it is just sheet metal with a few cuts and a few right angle bends - they should be able to do it inside 30 minutes) I can mount drive holders and a good fan to the case.

I hope my info will help. How can I insert pictures in this thread?

You can't. You can, however, imbed a clickable link by prefixing the URL with a backslash \

\www.google.com becomes http://www.google.com. Just check the preview first to be sure it works.

Well - I decided the sheetmetal shop building me a new case/cover was probably going to get too expensive - I'll wait for that till I decide how stable this is going to be as an MP3 machine. What I did instead was take a hard drive tray designed to mount in a 5.25" bay and make your hard drive removeable and placed it outside the case (on top of the case actually). I took the back plane connector off of my PCI/IAS cards and removed the piece of the cover that they would have attached to - that leaves lots of room to take the drive cables out the back of the websurfer. This arrangement has several advantages.... The tray has two small fans in it, so the drive stays nice and cool... the drive is outside the case, so it doesn't contribute to heat inside the case... and I can remove the drive and place it in an identical tray mounted in my desktop case, so I can transfer files a lot faster than over my network.
