HD via ISA controller ?
HD via ISA controller ? Has anybody been able to use the CompUSA ISA card?

New MessageHD via ISA controller ? (modified 0 times) hackaway
I bought the CompUSA ISA controller, plugged in the HD, powered from another machine, pull out DOC, disabled parallel port, serial port, and IDE in bios. No go. Could someone please help?

OK, In the BIOS you guys have to disable the onboard IDE controller before ANYTHING IDE driven will work. This should fix most of your problems, now about the guy with the Promise. You forgot to format the harddrive as "/s" or System Disk before you installed it in the WebSurfer. All you need to do is put it back in your computer, 'format driveletter: /s' kind of thing, and then re-copy the cab files over. This should fix any problems you guys are having with IDE not working.

Sorry for my ignorance, but can you tell me exactly what you did in the bios? Do you set "Primary IDE channel" to disabled? Did you set the "Block device" to disabled?
Thanks! I think more people here would appreciate this info.

Is your hard disk jumper set to master? This might cause the no boot sector found type errors.

I tried about 4 different PCI controllers, and i could not get any of them to work, couldn't get PCI scsi, or PCI ide to work , but the 4 dollar ISA IDE worked wonderfully, and the free ISA scsi worked good too (once i found one with a bootable BIOS).

Where did you get a 4 dollar ISA?

Along these same lines - I popped the DOC chip out - installed a SIIG Ultra IDE PRO PCI (Ultra DMA/33) card - added a 1.6GB 3.5" hard drive which has been formatted on my desktop to include the operating system - also copied old Norton Commander DOS file manager. Lacking any other memory late at night, I pulled the memory out of my 2nd WS - so I have 32MB in it. I have tried several things in bios setup getting several strange results - here goes:
1. In bios Integrated Peripherals - set IDE HDD Block Mode to Disabled - Primary IDE Channel to Enabled - left all else alone. Drive detection option doesn't see the drive. Shows 32MB of memory present.
2. I boot up - Screen shows the the PCI/IDE card info - then identifies the hard drive - says 'Primary Master (WDC21600 Multi-Word DMA2) on the screen - then "bios for Ultra IDE Pro PCI Installed3> Then I have a 2 minute wait after which it says 'starting Windows 95' - then another wait - 1.5 minutes this time - I get the Windows Splash screen (escape from it) - now another long wait
3. After a verrrrry long wait I finally get to a DOS prompt - The Norton Commander program loads & runs, but it is just as slow as windows was about loading.

So what's going on - I assume since the drives are seen & (eventually) accessed and properly identified that I have my bios settings correct. Am I having a PCI/IDE card problem? Do I just need more memory? Help?????

FYI - if I hang two drives on it, they are both seen. If I try to set the Cyl/Heads/Sect to the correct values for the drive(s) then when I boot I get a "Master drive failure"

I have tried others combinations of IDE enable/disable in the bios - actually it seems to work however I set them - just sloooooow!

Regarding the last post, I usually see these types of delays when there is a problem with the Master/Slave settings. When you only have one drive on the IDE chain, I think you are supposed to use the 'C/S' setting (whatever that means). If you have two drives, then you must jumper one as a master and one as a slave.

I'm using an ISA IDE controller (from CompUSA) and have successfully booted up with one hard drive and one CD Rom Drive. Unfortunately, I can't get the computer to boot up off the CDRom? I have the BIOS set to boot using: CDROM, C, but no go.. it still tries to boot up on C. If I let it go ahead and do that, I see the CDROM drive fine.

Another thing, somewhat off topic, but I'm getting a LOT of feedback in my reciever. Anybody else experiencing this?

C/S stands for Cable Select. The idea is that you could use a special cable that would take two drives, both jumpered as C/S, and one would automagically be set to master, and the other to slave.

In practice, I've never even so much as SEEN one of these cables. You want to use "master" for one-drive configurations.

I keep noticing strange behavior with the CUSA ISA:
1) No ISA - Starts OK (does not boot OS of course)
2) ISA, but no IDE cable - Starts OK
3) ISA, IDE cable connected - Starts OK
4) ISA, IDE cable connected to HD, HD NOT powered - Does NOT start
Now the interesting bit
5) ISA, IDE cable connected to HD, HD THEN connected to 5V supply, WS switched on - Doed NOT start
6) ISA, IDE cable NOT conencted to HD, HD connected 5V supply, HD starts, IDE cable connected to HD hot - Starts OK

Can anyone explain this behavior? Is it a problem with my HD?

To clarify my above post, I'm using an external 5V source.
