Lockups after audio driver install
anyone else have this problem?

New MessageLockups after audio driver install (modified 0 times) spankyboy
I have a WS with modem pulled, DOC pulled and
clocked to 233 (larger heatsink/fan).
I have a Promise Ultra33 PCI IDE board installed with a 3.2G WD drive. Win98 installs/runs fine. When I update the audio drivers with files linked here, sound will work (although kinda scratchy) until first reboot after updating driver. Then as soon as the startup sound tries to play, LOCKUP.
I have reformatted and reinstalled just to try to duplicate the problem and it does the same thing. I looked through the hardware manager and saw no IRQ conflicts (before the reboot). Sound on IRQ5, Promise on IRQ14, video on IRQ10... Its acting like an IRQ conflict but I can't find one! If I boot into safe mode, I can't change any of the settings and if I remove the sound card then windows will just automatically add it back the next reboot. Any Ideas?

Neat... I have the same problem. And, moreoever, with the USB drivers installed I get scratch whenever accessing a USB device. On mind it *seems* to be random... I can install Win98 just fine and it runs for ever. Then I install the drivers, and at some point after that (usually three or four reboots) it'll just stop rebooting.

BTW, a friend of mine reports he has a combination SCSI/Ethernet adapter he bought - it's PCI, designed for Mac, but has PC drivers. Odd...

I can boot into Win98 now. I disabled all sounds in the control panel "Sounds" applet. Win98 will run fine as long as I don't play a sound. ie. WS will lockup as soon as I try to play any sound including an mp3 with winamp. The only problem I can see in the Device manager is a ? next to PCI Bridge. I cannot get Windows to recognize any driver for it. I have tried the following files on the
http://www.avt.com.hk/mediagx/gxm3.asp
link provided in another thread. The win9xallc40.zip just has an executable that runs and appears to do nothing. The udma_win.zip has an .inf file that windows won't use for anything. Which file is the PCI Bridge driver?

when I ran the exe in win9xallc40.zip on win95 ran a mediaGX install that fixed my PCI bridge and added sound drivers. I would try downloading it again as others have reported success with win98.

I have not tested the sound yet but device manager thinks everything is fine.

P.S. I used MISFIT's bios image to get my PCI nic to work on int 15. So far so good.

OK, I downloaded the win9xball.zip and ran that one. It appears to have removed all the problems in the device manager. I also disabled the "Standard Dual PCI IDE Controller". I am STILL having losckups when playing sound. There are no conflicts in the device manager and here is a list of my IRQs:
00 System Timer
01 Standard 101/102 Key or Microsoft Natural Keyboard
02 Programmable Interrupt Controller
03 Comm Port (COM2) [WS modem)
04 Comm Port (COM1)
05 XpressAUDIO(TM) 16-BIT Sound
07 ECP Printer Port (LPT1)
08 System CMOS/Real Time Clock
11 CyberPro 20xx
12 PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port
13 Numeric Data Processor
15 Promise ULTRA33 Controller
15 IRQ Holder For PCI Steering

Anyone else with a PCI IDE controller having sound problems?
I really need the sound to work or this thing won't make much of a MP3 jukebox! ;)
