Winchip2 200

New MessageWinchip2 200 (modified 0 times) titanAE
have seen limited information so far, but it's socket7 with the same chip as the IO? So i'm assuming you could drop in a winchip2 200 and possibly overclock that. with the combo heat sink and fan and heat should be no problem whatsoever.

New MessageRE:Winchip2 200 (modified 0 times) as I recall
No, it is not the same chip as the IO. It does use the same socket but that doesn't guarantee compatibility.

Socket 7 is a physical standard for the socket. That is the number of pins, spacing, how deep etc. It does not dictate what you plug into it beyond those parameters.
In other words, just becuase the socket will take the chip doesn't mean that the board the socket is attached to will accept it.

The mdeia gx chipset is a multimedia chipset with functionality split between the various components. You can run a faster media gx chip, but it has to be a media gx chip.

My guess is that Cyrix (as it was then) made that part of the set a Socket 7 because there were already sockets, design tools, and chip carrier manufacturing capabilities available.

OK ppl,

YOU CANNOT REPLACE THE PROC! The controller chip is going to look for this type of proc to do alot of work. The whole idea behind the GX chipset is that it does it all. That was a good thing in it's design and the major drawback of the procduct.

Hmm...I've seen no information that says you cannot replace it. Yes, its that whack MediaGX but from what I have found the chipset actually will support the MediaGXm which has MMX and up to 300mhz chips. Now, they aren't available anywhere that I've seen (except on integrated boards) but who knows? Could be wrong, but thats what Ive seen thus far..

The chip in there is GXm with MMX and I have it overclocked to 266Mhz with a big fat heat sink and some thermal grease.

Yeah sorry about that. The chip is a GXm that's in there, not the GX. You are right.

Yes it is a MediaGX chip, and yes you could drop in a 300MhzGX but you have to remember that the motherboards FSB only operates at up to 33Mhz(indicated in motherboard manual)... By the way I am a overclocker by nature (PCs mostly) but this recent websurfer stuff has been rather interesting.

By the way, here is some background information about the Cyrix MediaGX processors: (Really hard to find if you want to get a 266Mhz MediaGX)

Developer Cyrix Corporation
Number of transistors 2,400,000
Register width 32 bits
Data bus width 32 bits
Cache bus width None
Address bus width 32 bits
Addressable memory 4 gigabytes
Floating point unit Integral
Primary cache size 16K
Secondary cache size None
Multiple processor support None

Clock speed (MHz): 120 133 150 233
Date introduced: 1996 1997 1997 1998
Operating voltage: 3.3 3.3 3.3 3.3
Design rules (micron): 0.6 0.5 0.5

I got the FSB speed from the motherboard manual however I have been looking around for other indications of FSB speed on various websites that have information about the MediaGX and found one to list the FSB's as 60Mhz and 66Mhz. This could be since in the manual the motherboard is mentioning Bus Clock, this could always be multiplied by 2x therefore coming up with 60Mhz and 66Mhz. Now, the 300Mhz MediaGX is operating at 66Mhz FSB and since the voltage selection goes up to 3.3v, you could run a 300Mhz MediaGX (renamed to MediaPC some say), at 300Mhz just fine in this motherboard. Pop a little larger heatsink/fan on the 300Mhz processor and boom you have a CHEAP nice pc. =]

The question is, does anyone know where to get these CPUs?

Sorry, I should have been more clear...I was talking about the GXm 300 CPUs...know where to find them?

Oh, my bad. I thought you meant in general. I have no clue. Seems like a lot of the mediagxm chips were soldered to the boards in whatever they were put in.

Damn..oh well...$77 is still too much for a low end CPU.
