Anyone else getting VXD errors when trying to run Win98. Here is what I am doing.. I run setup on my desktop to the first reboot, then I move the HD over to the Websurfer to try to finish the install. I am using a winbond ISA IDE card. Any ideas?? I know VXD errors are typically related to hardware problems...

Move you hard drive back to you computer, format it and make it bootable. Copy the Win98 folder from the cd to the HD and then istall in the WS. Start the installation from the WS and not you PC.

He said he pulls it at the first reboot. All installs of win98 are the same until after the first reboot, that's when all the machine-specific changes are made. It is common practice to ghost a "first-reboot" image to make installs go quicker. This is not the problem.

BTW I have the IRQ of the Winbond IDE card set at 14. This is standard as far as I can tell, where does everyone else have thiers set??

I am also having VXD errors and I also installed as you did, on desktop until first reboot. The reason I did this was because when I tried starting setup on the websurfer the initial scandisk came up with an error that one of the .cab files was corrupt and setup could not continue. What was your reason? Did you try Meathooks suggestion and if so did it solve your prblem?
It's worthless with these type errors.
By the way when I was installing it and then moved it to the websurfer - It stoped the install after another reboot and said it couldnt find win.com or something - so I just typed win.com and it continued.
I also did an install on another system up to the 1st reboot and also another install with win98 cd on the HD. Problems with both.
Just make the HD bootable with IDE CDROM support. Put your video, audio, udma and LAN drivers on it also. HD master + CDROM slave. Install off of CDROM for best results!!! :)

I switched to Digital Research ISA Card (staples $19). and it cured all my problems, I am running Win ME with 98 lite Pro. Works great No problems now. BTW...I also installed MisFit's bios. I tried to get my onboard IDE to work, but no luck... so I am using the ISA card, going out this weekend to get a PCI Symphony Wireless network card, hopefully it will work. I use the wireless network with my Win CE device now and love it...this way I dont have to make up a 60' Cat 5 cable and try to hide it.
