10/100 Ethernet Chipset Information
Might as well enable the motherboard ethernet

New Message10/100 Ethernet Chipset Information (modified 0 times) digits65
Datasheets and drivers for the Intel 82558 10/100 ethernet controller that should have been installed in these things are located at http://www.intel.com/design/network/82558.htm

Hmmm.... Looks like what is really needed is the "LAN on Motherboard Design Guide" and "Pin Definitions and Reference Schematics" documents. These can't be had off the web site.

Is there a reference design on the datasheets? I havnt looked yet. Its obvious to me what all the major parts are now. chip,
serial eeprom, 25MHz crystal osc. filter/iso
lation xformer etc. What is not so clear is the capacitor and resistor values. These can be figured out or calculated. I have another MB with the 82558B part on it and all the major components as the WebSurfer. Will dig into it this weekend. Offff... to print the data sheet. Oh I have 10 years of HW network design so that will help! :)

Hmmm.... maybe this is a start? I realize it's for a 82559 chip but we are resourceful...yes

The 82559 is a different part in a different package. Yes, it's only one digit away from being an 82558, but it's not the same thing.

I do have more info coming, but it looks like the hack killer on this is availability. Avnet has some, but at $48.40 each at a minimum quantity of 24 I'm not interested. This is an obsolete part and seems to be largely made of unobtainium, which everyone knows has skyrocketed in value with the NASDAQ fluctuations of the last few weeks.

If you've got one that can be desoldered, and the skills to do so without destroying the part, great! Otherwise, forget this hack.

I think Intel EtherExpress PRO/100+ uses 82558 and you can get it for ~$33 (PriceWatch). You can then desolder the chip and any other needed components and transfer them to the mainboard.

pofig, do you have any clue how to desolder a 208 pin quad flat pack (QFP) and keep it intact? Putting them down by hand is hard enough the first time, but taking them off? Sheesh!

Here is the info about the 82558 chips straight from Intel!

Yep, The EtherExpress PRO/100+ does have the 82558 chip. See:

http://support.intel.com/support/network/adapter/pro100/21397.htm

I have the non-"+" versions but they have the 82557. This version has the PHY external. Looks like I have a project for the weekend I f I can fine it locally. :)

So what are we saying here, "no onboard ethernet connection?" Come on, "did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor...?" Is it really impossible?

I hear that heat gun does wonders on this things. Haven't tried that myself, though.

Note : removal of most Surface mount items/ esp quad packs DESTROY them. we use a high Intensity IR source to do board rework, and it has a nice placard with it... (This device is GUARENTEED to destroy every item it desolders. it is for board rework and if you can afford this machine then you can afford to toss used parts.)

I remove them by masking off around the chip, using a lot of flux, and pointing a couple of heatguns at the chip until the flux boils. I don't try to reuse the parts I take off this way.

Meathook - No way, really? Did you ever see a movie called "Animal House", or are you too young for that?

I have an extra 82558 controller (you must have ability to solder on a PQFP) that I can send to anyone that can send me the intel reference design schematics. Hopefully the Intel rep will email them to me one of these days and I can try to get it to work, the tough part is going to be what to put in the serial eeprom.

Robert,

Do you still have the intel chip?
