Adding the COM1 port

New MessageAdding the COM1 port (modified 0 times) hardware1
Adding the COM1 port (if you want to):

"U17" is either a LGS GD75232D or HT6571. A 75232 is a common chip. You simply put one in "U10" and add the connector header.

The connector CN18 is pinned exactly like any serial card, just plug it in and go!

Caps are not needed for it to function, unless you are worried about FCC or long cable runs.

You may find the chips on dead serial cards at the swapmeet. www.digikey.com

This would be great for uploading MP3's.

USB ZIP drive would be better, but this is nice.

Cool.

U17 would be an excellent chip to include in a WS-MOD-3, for those of us with a fine-tipped iron, but not enough stuff for a Digi-Key order.

How about a source for these things? I cannot find any electronics distributors that carry them and will sell me small quantities (I can get 1000 of them if I specal order from digikey)

I would try and cannabalize a card (if I could find one with that chip!) but you run a 60% chance of killing it during chip extraction.. SMD were not designed for rework or salvage in mind.

My WebSurfer has U17 but is missing U10. Is that how they are all configured?
So if I understand correctly, U10 needs to be populated to enable COM1. In that case what function does U17 serve?

TI 75185 works just fine at U10.

Also, dont use a std 10 pin header to DB9 cable assembly with the WSP. The assembly needs to be connected so that, Header pin 1 goes to DB9 pin1, 2 to 2, 3 to 3 etc etc.
Pin 10 on both are not used. The normal assy that is used in most MBs are Header - DB9
1 - 1, 2 - 6, 3 - 2, etc. You will see the pattern. You mod one of these if the hood is not molded.

The caps are about 330pf. Not needed unless you have a long cable.

When hardware1 said that these chips are common, he wasn't kidding! Just for laughs, I dug up some old cards... 486 motherboards, Vesa Local-Bus (!) serial/ide cards, they *ALL* had the GD75232 parts on them. (Some with Goldstar parts, before they were even Lucky-GoldStar.

A little heat-gun, a little solder, and my WSP has the COM port as nature intended.

The hardest part was solder-sucking the 10 holes.

Like Vlad said, what is U17 used for in the WSP? I can't see anything obvious that needs RS-232 levels. Maybe the IR keyboard? Doubtful.

Has anyone tried moving U17 to U10 and seeing what breaks?

Well you all suck... I dug through all the boxes and this is what I found:

Goldstar GD75188
GD75189a

Unknown MC1488
MC1489

Anyone know if these will work?

I highly doubt that those would work, those numbers dictate the type of circuitry inside the chip. You could seriously FUBAR something by just soldering in random resistor packs...

Aluminum Gerbil

BTW is this HeVnSceNt from SOTMESC? What happened to your site yo?

Profile
U17 is used for the optional smartcard reader interface. Connector CN16 provides some the following signals (as taken from the STB1030 manual:

1 VCC
2 COM2TX
3 COM2RX
4 COM2CTS
5 COM2RTS
6 ICCRST
7 GND
8 NC

With a custom connector, you can add a second *limited* implementation RS-232 port. It came in handy for my application...
