Homemade Screen Protectors

I found this site and thought it may be helpful to all. I plan on trying the Avery/Xerox Window Decals since it seems to have the mildest adhesive. Hopefully I'll get to this tonight. I'll post my results when I get done.

I was able to find the Xerox Window Decals and appllied a piece of it to the ePods. I concur with the web site about it being hard to apply without bubbles. It is critical that the screen is absolutely clean before applying the film. Specks or dust on the screen will create a bubble which can't be worked out.

The factory finish is sort of a matte finish which is ever so slightly sticky. I tried the steam method mentioned on the web site to remove the matte coating and ended up with a gooey mess. I resorted to my good friend isopropyl alcohol to clean off the residue. This worked much better. If you do this use plenty of cotton balls and change them frequently (they tend to load up with the goop).

When the goop is removed the surface is fairly shiny. I don't really care for this since it increases glare. I removed the original film. The film came off easily without leaving any residue. I then applied a new protector to the screen. I want to see if it is still easy to remove after being on for a extended length of time.

The ePods works fine with the film appied. I haven't noticed the stylus performing differently than with protector off.

Overall I have mixed feelings about this idea. I like the idea of protecting the screen, but I'm not sure if it is worth the hassle of applying it and the resulting glare. YMMV.

I've made a few refinements to the method I use for applying the screen protector. The first is to remove the face plate of the ePods. Now you can apply the film over the entire display. The film is also easier to align with the faceplate off. There aren't exposed edges which can lift and trap dirt under the film once the faceplate is reattached.

The second refinement is to remove the matte finish before applying the film to the display. This makes it easier to keep the disolved goop off the ePods. However, there is a trade-off to this method. The matte finish acts like a protective coating when you are working the bubbles out. If you take it off beforehand, you have to be more careful about scratching the film. I used a credit card covered with a piece of CD cleaning material to avoid the scratches.

Just a quick update. I removed the screen protector after leaving it on for three weeks. It came off with no residue or other problems.

The protector was pretty scratched up from heavy use (everyone who sees the ePods has to play with it for awhile). The screen under the protector was pristine.

Glitch,

Was it liveable with the glare? Would you recommend this to others? Seems pretty easy to put on and take off.

Thanks

The glare was very annoying at first. However, after a few days I got used to it and it didn't bother me.

I would recommend the protector if you let your kids or spastic friend use it. Also, if you are taking it apart and putting it back together alot to mess with the innards. If you are careful with your ePods and just use the stylus on the screen, I see no real need for the protector. As always, YMMV.
