Internal CDRom - How To

I just completed adding an internal cd-rom drive into my webplayer. It is a very tight fit, but works. It does bind occasionally when ejecting but I think I just need to trim the plastic piece down a little more.
Here are the stats and the parts list. I have pictures of this and will be posting them soon.

Teac CD-224E 24x CD-ROM

You need a connector for it. The first link has a good picture of it, but this other place has it a LOT cheaper.

http://www.cablesgroup.com/product_info.php?products_id=751

This will allow you to connect it to a 40 pin IDE. The problem is that we have a 44 pin IDE. A 44 pin IDE is a 40 pin cable (but smaller) and 4 wires for power. I ended up making a special cable for it. Ill include the parts list for the place where I got my parts from, but the shipping is a killer from this place.

I got 2 of these (one for my hard drive and one for the connector to the board). 44 pin female socket
http://www.cablesonline.net/44pinfemidcr.html

I got one of these. 40 pin female socket. I believe this was the part I ordered (I messed up the first one and just pulled one of these off of a regular IDE HD cable)
http://store.yahoo.com/cablesonline/40pinfemidcs.html

Then ordered 2 feet if this cable.
http://www.cablesonline.net/1foot44pin20.html

I then crimped one of the 44 pin female connectors to the end of the ribbon cable and put the other 44 pin to the middle of the cable (actually it was only about 10 inches from the one connector to the other. I wanted more room for the cdrom end).

The last end was a bit tricky and took me 2 tries. I shredded the remaining end of the cable down about 2 inches. You might want to go down a little more than that, it was hard for me to connect it with only 2 inches. Then on my successful attempt, I used a mini screwdriver to punch each wire down onto the 40 pin female connector. The 4 wires on the end of the 44 pin cable are your power ones and are not needed (yet). After you get all 40 wires punched down, crimp it and then use a ohm meter to make sure that all the connections work.

Now the power connector. I couldnt find a floppy power connector so I took one off of my computer power supply (warning do so at your own risk). Wire 41 and 42 are 5v. I used wire 41 and crimped it to the red wire of the floppy connector. I then used a 3 wire crimp to crimp the floppy center 2 ground leads to the wire 43. After that, I used electrical tape to tape the 2 wires not used and to protect the 2 crimps I did.

Now the case modifications. You will need a Dremel tool. There is some metal shielding you need to cut along with quite a bit of plastic you need to cut. The cd-rom will fit above the motherboard. There are 2 posts on the lower case that need to be trimmed down to the height of the level of the edge of the lower case. The top will need most of the plastic cut off along with the metal tabs on the one side. Cut the plastic to about 3/4ths of the way towards the back of the player. Your gray end cap will have to be cut to accommodate the new cdrom drive too.

It looks almost like it is supposed to be in it! The color of the cdrom is just a little off from the gray caps but still looks kind of natural.

Like I said, give me a day or so to put up links for the pictures.

I got the pictures up.

First is of the cdrom drive.

Picture of the end connecter adaptor. By the way, the cdrom drive is upsidedown in this picture.

Here is a picture of the cdrom seated. In the final mounting, it is acutally mounted a little forward of where it is in this picture.

Here is a picture of it mounted.

Picture of it without the side cover.

You will notice that it does stick out a little from the webplayer. When I mounted it, I didnt use anything to secure it in place. The heatsink from the processor holds it nicely. If you really wanted to and tried, you could probably pull it all the way out from the side, but it will not fall out. It is too snug a fit.

Im going to toss a few more pictures in here to show off my system.

First is a top view of my webplayer before inserting the cdrom drive. I have a 6 gig hd under the motherboard.

This is my IBM miniPCI nic/modem card with custom leads and connectors.
http://www.blueadept.com/webplayerpics/minipci.jpg
http://www.blueadept.com/webplayerpics/modem-nic.jpg

For those of you hooking up the IBM mini pci, you only need 4 wires for ethernet. 1,2,3 and 6. The rest are not used and dont need to be hooked up. That is how I was able to fit those two connectors together. I cut the connectors down and left only 1-6 and cut off the 7 and 8 so that it would be flush with the modem connector.

In the future, I might add an LED or change the telephone LED to a multicolor LED so that I can tell if the modem is in use or the nic is in use.

Hope you like it.

I fixed the problem of the cd-rom drive binding occasionally. The solution is 2 fold. First you should run the IDE cable UNDER the motherboard to the harddrive, then fold the cable as neccessary for the cdrom drive. That gave me a lot more space, but it was still binding ocassionally. I found that if you trim the extra metal from the back cover around the screw hole, it will give you that .1mm that you need so that it doesnt hinder the ejecting of the cd.

I'm impressed. Makes me wish I didn't sell the laptop cdrom a few days ago...

I do want to try the rj45, where'd you get the info for that?

Nice work.

Well first off I used the specs for the IBM mini-pci ethernet card from here:

http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=vwgeneral&Post=681&Idle=0&Sort=0&Order=Descend&Page=0&Session=blueadept.103939257656626

The only ones that need to be soldered on for the eithernet are pins 4,5,6 and 9. Ethernet may be 8 positions, but only use the first 2 wires (usually orange/orange white) and the split pair (usually green/green white).

I used 2 keystone connectors that we get from NCI ( http://www.trynci.com ). The part numbers are 312201 (rj-45) and 312225 (rj-12). The part numbers also have a - with a number on the end to designate a color. 0=black 4=blue 5=white 6=grey and 9=ivory. So a black rj-45 would be 312201-0. I had to cut them down to get them to fit together. On the rj-45, I had to cut quite a bit away, basically making it a 6 pin connector in the back. I also trimmed down the rj-12 connector too. Then glued them together. There is also a post that gets in the way of the connectors. I trimmed the connector (rj-45 one) so that it would sit on top of the post. Then I glued it to the back of metal piece on the webplayer.

I took apart my webplayer this week. I found that my IDE cable had been pierced by the old modem connector. I ripped the connector off the old modem and put it over those pins on the motherboard. That fixed that problem.
